Why this role is exciting

Be the person who makes the convention accessible to everyone!

What you’ll actually do

Recruit a team of volunteers that will assist with accessibility needs of convention attendees. Work with vendors and division leadership for any contracted accessibility services.

Skills and experience

Previous experience vetting and using accessibility tools, applications, and services is preferred. Being organized, able to work with and direct other volunteers is necessary. Work with companies for services to enhance accessibility at the convention. Must be organized and able to meet deadlines.

The work involved in the role

Organize the accessibility services that will be provided at the convention. Work with the Division Leadership to understand what services can be made available for convention members and what services should be guided, organized, but not paid from the convention budget. Some contracted services could be mobility scooters, live captioning events, panels, and meetings, sign language interpreters, restroom access, quiet rooms, and more. Work with the Volunteer Team to recruit volunteers for the Accessibility Team for both pre-convention, organization and planning, and at-convention, staffing the Accessibility table and ensuring services are successfully provided.

Time commitment

Meetings before the convention could include monthly division meetings with the other area Leads, area meetings scheduled by you with your team as often as needed, and annual all-staff meetings. Usually meetings are virtual or include virtual components.
The job itself may include 3-5 hours per week in the bid phase and in the early planning phases, with an uptick in hours in the 3-4 months leading up to the convention.
