Why this role is exciting
Worldcon’s online community is huge, enthusiastic, and wonderfully chaotic—in the best way. As Social Media Community Manager, you’ll help shape how fans interact with the convention online, keep conversations welcoming and lively, and make sure people feel heard, included, and excited long before they arrive in Dublin.
What you’ll actually do
You’ll be the day‑to‑day voice of Worldcon across our social platforms, focusing on community interaction rather than content publishing. While the Platform Managers handle scheduled posts, you’ll be the person who replies to comments, answers questions, nudges conversations in a positive direction, and keeps an eye on how fans are engaging with us. You’ll help maintain a friendly, inclusive tone, encourage participation, and gently redirect discussions when needed. You’ll also flag questions or issues that need escalation to Communications, Programme, or other divisions. In short, you’re the human presence that makes our social media feel warm, responsive, and alive.
Skills and experience
You don’t need professional moderation experience, but you should be comfortable engaging with online communities and responding thoughtfully to a wide range of comments. A friendly communication style, patience, and good judgement are essential. You should be able to recognise when a conversation needs a light touch, when it needs a firmer boundary, and when it needs escalation. Experience with fandom communities or event‑related social media is helpful, but not required. What matters most is reliability, empathy, and a steady online presence.
The work involved in the role
This is an online‑only role, and you can do it from anywhere. Most of your time will be spent checking comments, responding to questions, and keeping an eye on ongoing conversations. You’ll collaborate with the Social Media Platform Managers to ensure messaging stays consistent and that questions get answered promptly. It’s not physically demanding, but it is public‑facing—you’ll be interacting directly with fans, creators, and sometimes confused newcomers who just need a friendly guide.
Time commitment
Expect a few hours a week during quieter periods, increasing when major announcements go out or when community activity spikes. At‑con, the pace may increase depending on how active the platforms are. Most communication is asynchronous, though occasional team check‑ins may be scheduled.

What you’ll get out of it
You’ll gain experience in community management, online engagement, and digital communication. You’ll help shape the public face of the convention, work with a friendly team, and get to see fans respond in real time to your interactions. It’s a rewarding way to help people feel welcome and excited about Dublin 2029.
