Why this role is exciting
If you love connecting with fans online, shaping the public voice of a major science fiction convention, and helping build excitement in the run‑up to the event, this role puts you right at the centre of how Worldcon presents itself to the world. You’ll help thousands of people stay informed, engaged, and enthusiastic.
What you’ll actually do
You’ll manage one of Worldcon’s official social media platforms—Bluesky, Facebook, or Instagram. Your day‑to‑day work will include scheduling pre‑assembled posts, replying to comments, and keeping an eye on how people engage with the content. You’ll work closely with the Communications team to ensure posts go out on time, match the convention’s tone, and support key announcements. You’ll also monitor engagement trends on your platform—things like which types of posts perform best, what time of day gets the most interaction, and how fans respond to different formats. Your insights help shape future content and keep the convention’s online presence lively and welcoming.
Skills and experience
You don’t need to be a professional social media strategist, but you should be comfortable using your assigned platform and enjoy interacting with online communities. A friendly communication style, good judgement, and the ability to stay calm when comment threads get lively are all helpful. Experience with scheduling tools or analytics is a bonus, but training can be provided. What matters most is reliability, responsiveness, and a genuine interest in helping fans feel connected.
The work involved in the role
This is an online‑only role, and you can do it from anywhere. Most of the work involves checking scheduled posts, monitoring comments, and keeping an eye on engagement patterns. It’s not physically demanding, and you won’t need to be onsite during the convention unless you want to help with live posting. The role is public‑facing in the sense that you’re interacting with fans, but you’ll be supported by the Communications team if anything tricky arises.
This role is active pre‑con and at‑con, with occasional post‑con wrap‑up. Pre‑con, you’ll help maintain a steady flow of updates and announcements. At‑con, you may help with daily highlights, reminders, and live engagement. Post‑con, there may be a few final posts or follow‑ups.
Time commitment
Expect a few hours a week during quieter periods, increasing when major announcements or campaigns are scheduled. You’ll check comments regularly, monitor engagement, and ensure posts go out as planned. At‑con, the pace may increase depending on how active your platform is. Most communication is asynchronous, though occasional team meetings may be scheduled.

What you’ll get out of it
You’ll gain experience in social media management, community engagement, and digital communication strategy. You’ll work with a friendly team, help shape the public face of the convention, and get to see fans respond in real time to the content you help publish.
